The Coming Age of Consciousness

We are living at the time of the coming of the Age of Aquarius—the Age of Consciousness. That is, if we make it that far.

Prayerfully, we are transitioning out of the Piscean Age, an age dominated by survival by power, into an age where how we think, speak, and act becomes the projection of our reality, into the Age of Aquarius. That’s a mouthful, I know. Please allow me to explain.

At the beginning of this Piscean era, the world was and is ruled by survival, survival shaped through power. Earthly power is acquired in many ways: fear, jealousy, physical force, psychological threat, intimidation, and domination are among the most effective. “Might is right” became our mantra, and humanity accepted it as truth. In the scientific language of survival, we were told that only the strong survive. And so, we submitted ourselves—consciously or unconsciously—to this way of thinking.

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Lord Acton’s words ring as true today as when they were written. What he was pointing out to is not simply political corruption, but a morally, ethically and spiritual one as well. Power over others becomes an attractive moral nuisance. As authority increases, temptation to use it intensifies. Rationalizations multiply. Excuses fly justifications abound. Then, eventually, collapse follows. We become a victim of the abuse of power.

I say “victim” carefully here—because the destruction is self-inflicted. Power over others is one of the most intoxicating forces in the universe. The bully feels empowered. The controller feels justified. Power becomes drug, and like all drugs, it promises elevation but delivers descent. It drags us down into the pit of control. Eventually, we realize that we are not in control, of anything.

Initially, power offers control—directly or through threat. It has always been the easiest way to become the boss, the leader, the chief. It was true in the tent conclaves of the ancient world, and it remains true in modern society.

A strong defense against the offense of others creates courage; courage builds confidence; confidence provides the ladder for survival—whether in attack or defense. The more power one has, the more people one can control. This may make leadership easy, but it does not make it real. Courage, confidence, and character are the antidotes.

This universe, as we know it, has been built on survival through power—power in all its forms. The eagle swoops down; the rabbit is taken. Who is right? Who is wrong? In truth, both were simply fulfilling their role in the play of existence—God’s will in motion. Who are we to judge? As Sikhs, we observe the play and allow the actors to speak their lines while still living in our Guru’s direction.

For most people, life feels like a perpetual challenge. Yet it is largely a matter of perception—shaped by memory, conditioning, and belief. We create our own reality. Yes, much of who we are is influenced by DNA, culture, character, upbringing, and karma. All of these play a role in shaping us.

But the lives of a few—those recognized as people of true understanding—offer us something more. They show us how to go beyond ourselves and into correct perception, into true reality. This is life lived at the highest level of consciousness, where compassion dictates action. A life governed by compassion can never be wrong.

For most, a compassionate life represents a profound shift. The Aquinas model is a way of giving way to a new reality—one where brute power no longer rules. But changing habits is difficult. Changing them when the change is not self-chosen is even harder.

A change of this magnitude requires divine intervention. When God intervenes, mountains shake and humanity is rattled into awareness. When there is no other way, change becomes either inevitable—or impossible. The path to the virtues to be lived in the Age of Aquarius begins with following God’s direction rather than our own. This is not easy—but it IS possible.

Awareness is the necessary precursor. If you do not know where you are going, that is exactly where you will arrive—nowhere. Therefore, it is far better to listen to and act in accordance with a man or woman of understanding than to rely solely on your own untrained mind. Commitment to understanding brings awareness through intuition, and verification through ever-deepening living truth. Life is not as complicated as we make it—provided the correct process of conscious understanding is in place.

The problem is that the mind continually pulls us back into survival mode, using power as its primary tool. Yet the universe—this universe—needs our help. It needs a critical mass of people willing to question the old mantra. Perhaps “might is right” is not right at all—or at least not the only way. Perhaps it is time to live by the values of the Age of Aquarius.

Here’s the good news. It really doesn’t matter whether this universe makes it to the Age of Aquarius, or not. It would be great if we make it, and I pray we do so, but whether or not we do so collectively doesn’t affect the individual life lived by Aquarian values This is all that matters. We can make it, or fail, collectively or individually. The anomaly is that by making it individually it means serving collectively. This conundrum is within the grasp of each one of us has a opportunity for all to enter directly into the Aquarian Age. It may or may not be available collectively to earthlings, but each earthling can still make it, thanks to God. So, keep-up and you’ll be lifted to beyond the beyond.

As I see it, the survival of humanity depends not on whether we survive, but on how we survive. Yes, survival matters. But the method must change. The new way is survival through love—with accountability, with consequences. A love that mirrors karma. A godly love. A love capable of defending itself at every level.

That is Sikh Dharma.
That is the Khalsa.

So, as the song says, “Come along with me, to my little corner of the world.” It is a place where the Age of Aquarius is lived. It’s a place of survival, Infinite survival.
